Aaptiv App Review: Take a Workout Class Anytime, Anywhere
You guys know I love trying new workouts, so when I was offered the opportunity to try out Aaptiv, a personal trainer app, I couldn't wait to test it out!
If you haven't heard of it, Aaptiv is an app that features instructor-led workouts that's almost like taking a studio class, but you can take it anywhere at anytime! Each class has a playlist and personal trainer who guides you through the workout. The trainer tells you what equipment you need, tells you exactly what moves to do and even pushes you to do your best.
What it's like taking an Aaptiv class
When I first opened the app, I was really excited to see the wide variety of workouts that are available. I could choose outdoor running, treadmill running, strength training, elliptical, indoor cycling, rowing, stairclimber, stretching, yoga, meditation, and more.
Since I am currently training for a half marathon, I decided to try some of the running workouts. It was a cold day, so a treadmill workout sounded perfect. After selecting treadmill, I saw the list of all the treadmill classes. Again, there were so many options! There were classes focused on intervals, tempo runs, sprints, speed work etc. They also ranged in duration from 20 minutes to an hour long.
I chose the "Find Your Groove" class which is a 21-minute interval run with a pop music playlist. I got on the treadmill, clicked on the class, and started running. The music played and the personal trainer, John, started talking.
John told me to set my speed to 5.5-6.5 on the treadmill and to run to the rhythm of the music. As I was running, he gave me cues on how to stay relaxed and improve my form. He instructed me to keep my core tight, shoulders relaxed, and to land properly on the balls of my feet.
As the workout progressed, each song had a different pace and John would tell me when to speed up and when to slow down. Each song had sprints that corresponded with the beat of the music.
I'm not going to lie, it really felt like I was in an OrangeTheory class! It was so nice not having to think about what to do for a workout and the instructor's cues helped me stay entertained and focused. Normally treadmill workouts are boring, but this class made it fun.
When the 21 minutes were up, I ended the class and the app asked me to rate it. It then suggested a stretching workout for me to complete. This was great because I normally forget to stretch, but having someone guide me through it made it so much easier.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience taking the class and was excited to try more!
About the app
Aaptiv is really easy to use and the UI is intuitive. I had no problem navigating the app and finding the class I wanted to take.
I love that the app keeps track of the classes I take in the "profile" section. There you can see how many classes you've taken in each category and see your all-time stats including the number of miles run, minutes spent working out, and the number of calories burned. You can also set notifications to remind yourself to take a class.
The "Trainers" section shows the bios of each personal trainer sorted by categories High Intensity, Technical, and Fun and Supportive. You can learn more about each person and see the classes that they teach.
Verdict: what do I think of Aaptiv?
Overall, I was very impressed with Aaptiv and I think it does a great job of replicating the studio class experience. I was pleasantly surprised with the energy level each personal trainer had and the level of detail they provided with each direction. I was expecting the trainer to only say a few things, but he coached the entire class, just like if I was taking an in-person class.
I think this app is great for people who like having direction and workouts planned out for them. Unlike many other workout apps, Aaptiv doesn't show you or list out each exercise or part of the workout. This adds the same level of surprise you'd get if you were taking a class. It's great for keeping you motivating you and encouraging you to try new workouts.
This app is also perfect for when you're traveling or don't have access to your typical gym or studios. I'm definitely planning on using Aaptiv when I'm in Arizona this weekend.
