5k Your Way: Train for a 5k with Aaptiv

When I was in 8th grade I signed up for the cross country team. It was the only officially-recognized sports team at Smith Middle School and I was excited to wear that uniform and be part of it. We practiced after school 3 days a week and had meets on Saturday mornings where we ran 2-mile races through the wooded trails in various suburbs around Connecticut.

It was all great until I realized after the first day of practice that I actually hated running and vowed to never do cross country again.

Unfortunately for me though, my dad never let me quit anything. So, I had to stick it out for the rest of the reason and he had to painfully watch me finish (almost) last in every race.

My point here is that running never came naturally to me. I hated it for a very long time and accepted the fact that I’d never be a runner.

However, one day I changed my mindset and decided to try becoming a better runner. I started by running a mile at a time and tried running every few days. Over time, my attitude towards running completely changed and I grew to love it. I even ran two half marathons in the last year which was something I couldn’t have ever imagined doing just a few years ago.

I wanted to share my story because I know there are so many others out there who struggle with running just like I did. If that’s you, I’d like to challenge you to work on your running too!

Since running alone is tough, I’m inviting you to join me in participating in Aaptiv’s 5k Your Way virtual 5k! Aaptiv believes that anyone can be a runner, so they are hosting a virtual 5k to celebrate that.

The virtual 5k will take place on Saturday, October 27th and the best part is, you can run the race however you want to! You can run the whole thing, run part and walk part, or just walk it! It really up to you. Not only that, you can log your training miles and for every mile you run, Aaptiv will donate to the cause of your choice.

To help you prepare for the 5k, Aaptiv has two 5k training programs in the app that you can choose from: Cross-Train to 5k and Focus on the 5k. I’ll be doing the cross-training one which has 3 different versions: beginner, intermediate, or advanced.

If you are new to Aaptiv, it is an app that has virtual workout classes and programs. Each class is set to a playlist and is voiced by a personal trainer. The trainer has you run to the beat of the music and provides cues on when to speed up and slow down. They also help you get in the right mindset, provide you with encouragement and help you with your form. I personally love the app and used it during the training of my last half marathon. I am really excited to train for this 5k and I’ll be doing the Cross-train to 5k program. Since I’m currently doing other workouts as well, I won’t be doing the full program, but I will be taking the classes each week.

  2. Download the Aaptiv app and pick one of the two 5k training programs (Focus on 5k or Cross-train to 5k)

  3. Start taking the classes in your program

  4. Download the Charity Miles app and join the Aaptiv team. Log each mile you run so that Aaptiv can donate to your chosen cause.
