10 Things to Know Before You Start BBG
Thinking about starting BBG? There are several things you should know if you want to get the best results. After completing nearly 5 rounds of BBG, I've learned many tips and tricks along the way. People often ask me for advice on how to get started with BBG, so I created a list of 10 things that I wish I knew before my first round.
1. Don't swap out the exercises
The BBG guide is HARD, especially at first and there are exercises that you will absolutely not want to do, like commandos and spider push-ups (in my opinion).
However, it is super important to do them anyway, as it will be the only way you will get better at them. When I first started, I thought I was too weak to do those moves, so I always modified them or swapped them out with something else. It seemed like every circuit there was something I was changing.
Obviously, that didn't work out so well and I was frustrated with my lack of progress. Once I committed to following the guide exactly, I grew so much stronger and saw results. I couldn't always get through all the reps, but at least I did as many as I could. Now, I don't even mind commandos and I'm so proud of how much stronger I have become after doing them so much.
2. Get a friend to do it with you
Really, this is probably the best thing that you can do. There is nothing else that will keep you as accountable or committed to sticking to it. Working out with a friend will push you to work your hardest and it's definitely nicer having someone else to suffer through...I mean, enjoy....the workouts with you.
Even if you can't workout in-person with a friend, you can always text each other to stay accountable. Make it a deal that you will both do your workout that day and let each other know when you are done. That way you can't talk yourself out of working out.
3. You can't be afraid to use heavy weights
I can't stress this one enough. You will not see progress unless you use heavy enough weights! I promise you, you will not get bulky or too strong. The guides are supposed to be hard. If it starts to feel easy or you think you can use heavier weights, then you should. I started my first round with 10lb weights and I had barely any arm strength. Sure, I could have moved faster with lighter weights, but the weights are what toned my body and brought definition to my legs and arms. With each round, I make sure to increase my weights to further challenge myself.
4. It's okay to do other workouts besides BBG
BBG is a great program, but let's face it, it can become a bit boring doing the same type of workouts all the time. I love doing BBG, but I also enjoy other types of fitness like running, cycling classes, and yoga.
Because of this, I make time for these other activities, especially if I don't feel like doing BBG on a particular day. So, if there's a different type of workout you love doing, do it! It's okay if you put off a BBG workout a day or two if it means you're getting in a different workout. However, just make sure that you still stay committed to doing BBG consistently if you want best results.
5. Don't wear pants that have zippers or thick stitching on the back during ab days
On ab days, you will be laying down on your back a lot. If you have zippers, thick stitching, or anything else on the back of your pants or shorts, it will dig into your skin and it will hurt. And it will leave a blister or a bruise, it will hurt for several days after and you will not be a happy camper. Not that I'm saying this from personal experience or anything.....Same goes for bras. Don't wear one with a clasp in the back or you will be sorry.
6. Even though it says you don't need one, you really need a gym
I started BBG at home, but once you get later in the guide to about week 7 or so, it is pretty difficult to do correctly without equipment. You need several benches by the end of the guide, plus a sturdy box that you can jump on. I certainly did not have the proper equipment in my apartment bedroom. Not to mention, my neighbors were less than pleased with all my jumping.
7. You will need more than 12 weeks to see great results
Unless you have a considerable amount of weight to lose or you dramatically clean up your diet, it will probably take more than 12 weeks to see significant changes. For me, I started to see real results a little after starting my second round of BBG.
Of course, everyone is different and you'll see results at different times than others. Even after a year of BBG, I haven't had a 'major transformation,' but I have become much stronger and more toned overall.
8. You probably know someone else who does BBG and you just don't know it yet
There are millions of women all over the world doing this program and you will see other women at the gym doing it. I can even bet you that many of your friends or coworkers probably do it too. Don't be afraid to tell people that you do BBG! If you see someone at the gym doing the workout, stop and say hi! One of the greatest parts about doing BBG is the community. I have met so many friends through it and I would say that is the single best part about it.
Look on Instagram and Facebook to see if there are meetups in your area. Going to the meetups in LA and Denver has allowed me to meet new friends and workout buddies. The meetups have always been so fun and it's a great way to meet like-minded people.
9. Get wireless headphones
Almost all BBG workouts involve jumping, which makes it nearly impossible to use traditional wired headphones. I used to just put my phone on speaker to play my music, but this was far from ideal and nearly impossible to do if the gym was busy. Once I bought wireless headphones, everything changed. I can now have the music loud in my ears and the earbuds stay put as I perform jump squats, burpees, and even tuck jumps. If you invest in any sort of fitness equipment, I recommend buying wireless headphones.
10. BBG can possibly change your life.
BBG is a great way to get started on living a healthier and more active life. Once you become fully immersed in it, you might never look back. It can help you look and feel better, give you more confidence, and it might even inspire you to take your fitness journey even further. If it weren't for BBG, I never would have realized my love for fitness and healthy living.
However, this didn't happen overnight. It took several months and 2 full rounds before it truly became a habit and a change in my lifestyle.
If I can give you any advice, it would be this: give BBG your all and commit to finishing the 12 weeks. Don't skip workouts and don't give up. Once you commit for a while you will notice results and you will be asking yourself why you didn't start sooner.
